National Council on Disability Commends U.S. Civil
Rights Commission on Its Americans with Disabilities Act Studies
WASHINGTON--The National Council on Disability (NCD)
applauds the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on the release of its
two reports that give mixed grades to the U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice for enforcing
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and criticize misleading
news media coverage of ADA.
According to NCD chairperson Marca Bristo, "The National
Council on Disability commends U.S. Commission on Civil Rights chairperson
Mary Frances Berry, the other commissioners, and commission staff
for recognizing the importance of evaluating federal enforcement
efforts under ADA."
"Their studies, while more limited in scope than NCD's
disability civil rights monitoring project, will provide important
input to our study of ADA and three other civil rights laws. I commend
our sister agency for the hard work on these reports and for their
ongoing commitment to vigorous enforcement of the civil rights of
all people, including people with disabilities."
NCD, an independent federal agency making recommendations
to the President and Congress on public policy affecting people
with disabilities, is currently coordinating a multi year study
on ADA enforcement.
