National Council on Disability to Conduct News Conference and Forum on Unconvention on Human Rights of People with Disabilities

WASHINGTON--The National Council on Disability (NCD) will release a white paper titled Understanding the Role of an International Convention on the Human Rights of People with Disabilities at a news conference at 9:00 a.m. on June 12, 2002, at the Wyndham Hotel, 1400 M Street, NW, Washington, DC.

In September 2001, NCD issued a resolution (http://www.ncd.gov/newsroom/testimony/resolution_09-14-01.html) declaring its support for the development of a convention. In November 2001, the UN voted officially to begin development of this historic legal instrument, which would provide legally binding standards for protecting the rights of people with disabilities in every country that ratifies the treaty.

NCD's paper addresses a United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. NCD developed its document to examine the need for such a convention and the role of the United States, including the government and civil society, in its development.

The news conference will be immediately followed by an educational forum for invited guests. The forum, which is sponsored by NCD and the United States International Council on Disabilities, will bring together representatives of national disability organizations and other key civil and human rights groups to engage in a dialogue about international human rights instruments and their relationship to U.S. disability legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act.
