National Council on Disability Chair Lex Frieden Takes Oath in Oval Office

WASHINGTON--National Council on Disability (NCD) chairman Lex Frieden, with President Bush standing by his side, took the oath of office on September 26, 2002, in a White House Oval Office ceremony administered by Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card, Jr.

Mr. Frieden, his wife Joyce, and their grandson Trey, visited with the President after taking the oath.

Mr. Frieden is also senior vice president at TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research) in Houston, Texas. TIRR is a comprehensive medical rehabilitation center which provides clinical, educational, and research programs pertaining to spinal cord and brain injuries and other disabling conditions. He is also director of TIRR's Independent Living Research Utilization Program and professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine.

NCD is an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress on disability policy. Mr. Frieden was appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 26, 2002, the twelfth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
